Researching the Energy System Transition -
Apply now for new scholarships!

The RLS Graduate Program is set to expand with three additional scholarship recipients starting in 2026. Interested applicants can apply for a scholarship until August 17, 2025. The planned start of funding is early 2026.

Further information about the application process and required documents can be found here. In particular, the following questionnaire must be completed. The application deadline is August 17, 2025, and selection interviews are expected to take place on September 10.

Interested candidates should contact info@rl-kolleg.de for more details and to schedule a recommended consultation (available from late April).

EnergeSystemWende - the topics

Energy system transformation towards an energy system with 100 % renewable energies places completely new demands on the design of the technical system and energy market. The graduate school of the Reiner Lemoine Foundation addresses these changes and develops solutions how the renewable energy system can be shaped. In detail, the PhD students deal with the following topics and questions:

  • Anya Heider is working on a holistic flexibility assessment of the German energy system. To this end, she analyses technical and market-related options to promote the usage and investment in existing and potential flexibility options.

  • Alexandra Krumm is working on social aspects of the energy system transformation. This includes aspects of the design of a just energy system transformation, the role of different actors in the transformation process, and social participation.

  • Marlin Arnz: Decarbonisation of transport is a big challenge that requires both behavioural and technological strategies. What will our mobility and its energy demand look like in a renewable, integrated energy system and how do we get there realistically? Prof. Dr. Christian von Hirschhausen at Technical University Berlin, chair of infrastructure policy, supervises his thesis.

  • Ricardo Reibsch is researching new applications for storage technologies. The focus is on the role of decentralized battery storage systems in successfully turning the energy system around in low-voltage networks, including electromobility, and electric heat generators.

The core team is complemented by an associate member who is also writing his doctorate on the facets of the EnergieSystemWende. He complements our thematic focus and collaborates with us in specific projects.

  • Nikolas Klausmann: Within the framework of his PhD project at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, he is looking at new small players in the energy sector and their access to electricity markets from a legal perspective. In doing so, he also focuses on current developments in European Law and their influence on the national regulatory framework. From a legal perspective, he also discusses information technologies (e.g. Blockchain-Technology), which are meant to enable scalable and secure market communication for such actors in the context of new business models, such as local peer-to-peer trading. The work is supervised by Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Schwintowski

Mentorship programm

The students of the PhD group are supported by a number of mentors. These are experts who deal with the theoretical and practical facets of the energy system transition in the context of their respective work.

The PhD students are in dialogue with these actors, with the aim of contributing to applied research and solution-oriented energy policies.
